During the consultation

  • 1.

The first part of a consultation is what I like to call information-gathering. Basically I will ask you lots of questions about your pet in order to create a clearer picture of her/his day-to-day life, character, likes/dislikes, and of course, the reason for your visit with me. This will help me form the basis for the TCVM diagnosis and inform the treatment method.

  • 2.

The next part of the consultation is when I will start to feel the patients, looking at things like pain/heat in the meridians, pulse, tongue, coat, etc. in horses I will also do a ‘scan’ or the body, which will give me information about any pain or imbalances.

  • 3.

Once I have gathered this information I will make a TCVM diagnosis that is based on Chinese Medicine theory and will inform the treatment to be used.

  • 4.

Choosing a treatment method will depend solely on the patient and the diagnosis made, but may include dry needles (traditional acupuncture needles), electro acupuncture, moxa, aqua, laser, herbal therapy and/or food therapy.

  • 5.

An important aspect for me in treating my patients is that I am always listening to what they accept. I never want to force my patients and it is very important to me that the treatment is a positive experience for them.

After the consultation

Some patients can become quite tired after a treatment and this is normal due to the opening of Qi circulation and nothing to be worried about. I recommend a few days of rest after treatment. Horses should not be ridden for about 3 days post treatment.
